A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack overwhelms a network with excessive internet traffic, making it unreachable. This concept parallels the human mind when bombarded by continuous thoughts and internal dialogues, leading to a state of overload.
Is our mind capable of experiencing its own form of DDoS?
'DDoS' is a sculpture by Rodrigo Garrido and Irune Arancibia that uses artificial intelligence to explore this analogy. It depicts human consciousness on an upper screen and the flood of thoughts, emotions, and sensory inputs on a lower screen, hinting at the overload familiar in the era of constant online interaction.
During the 'attack', the representation of consciousness struggles with the influx, similar to how our minds can get overwhelmed, affecting clarity, decision-making, and focus. In severe cases, this can lead to mental breakdowns, mirroring a website crashing under a DDoS attack.
The physical form of the sculpture intertwines neon lights and a metallic scaffold, a deliberate choice to imbue the piece with elements fundamental to life and reflective of the digital age. Neon, an echo of the carbon that threads through all known life, and metal, a testament to the enduring strength and resilience required to forge artificial life, coalesce to create not just an artwork but a living allegory of the human condition in the digital era.
Through 'DDoS', Garrido and Arancibia not only capture the essence of digital overwhelm but also invite us to ponder—can we reboot our minds as easily as we do our devices?
